This week was my first week after taking over the Branch Secretary role from Penny.

On Tuesday Andy (Branch Chair) and I attended a seminar on LGPS at the Unison office in London which re-enforced to me how important it is for us to keep this pension scheme and protect it at all costs as it is still one of the best pension schemes available.

Straight after this we met with Gill Archer who leads Unison‘s work with Social Workers to discuss how we can help solve the recruitment and retention problems in Northamptonshire.

We have decided to offer 2 consultation sessions to gather the views of Social Workers, members and non-members, to enable us to better understand the issues which cause so many to leave the authority. These will be attended by Unison regional staff and possibly national too. We do need as many attendees as possible so please attend one of the sessions below if possible as we have also asked to meet the Children’s Commissioner in the New Year to discuss this and it would be good to have staff feedback before this.

Monday 14th of January 2019
One Angel Square, Northampton
12.30 to 2.00 PM

Wednesday 16th of January 2019
William Knibb Centre, Kettering
12.30 to 2.00 PM

We have had 11 new stewards training this week in Northampton which is great as ideally, we need a steward in every team/workplace. On that note nomination forms and AGM dates have gone out to all of you by post and if you are interested in becoming a Steward, Health & Safety Rep or ULR or perhaps one of the Officer posts please complete the form and return it to us by 12.00hrs on 11th January 2019.

I have also attended Children First ECF and Schools ECF to represent the views of staff in those sectors along with colleagues from Unison and other unions.

We have been asked by HR to clarify a mistake in last week’s newsletter where we said, ‘The Branch is also campaigning for Staff not to lose a day’s pay when they are poorly. It is unreasonable to expect Staff to work when they are ill because they can’t afford not. Don’t forget that if you have a recognised medical condition or disability then please let your manager know as you can then be paid from the first day.’

The part in red is incorrect, you don’t get day one paid if you have a recognised medical condition OR disability, the NCC policy actually states if an employee is eligible for OSP (as detailed in section 5), has OSP benefits remaining and whose occasion of sickness absence is directly related to their disability, they will be paid OSP from the first day of that period of sickness absence.

I will be on leave next Friday celebrating the Winter Solstice, so Lorna Smith will be writing the roundup.

I wish you all a good Xmas break and hope you enjoy the extra day off on Xmas Eve which was suggested by a staff member and us.

All the best
Kev Standishday
